VIVARA BECOMES AN “OPEN AIR” LABORATORY

Vivara ( ITALY ) – Once again Vivara becomes an “open air” laboratory to study some general environmental dynamics which here are, by definition, more controllable.In recent days we hosted a project of the Swiss Federal Institute WSL: the ecologist Marco Basile and the ornithologist of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station Rosario Balestrieri started, at our reserve – accompanied by our guide Michele Scotto Di Cesare – and in the waters of the Kingdom of Nettuno Marine Protected Area, a sampling activity of the wood of Mediterranean perennial shrubs with the aim of investigating the exchange of nutrients determined by birds between the marine and terrestrial environments.

“We use the growth rings of plants as a time machine,” the researchers explain.

During the activity, Corsican gull guano was also collected. This is a first step in complex analyzes that will be conducted in Switzerland and which will serve to reveal and measure the relationships between what happens above and below the surface of the sea. (LeoPugliese)
